Visual Tour of Berkely County

With roots in the rice culture that fueled the Southern economy, Berkeley County boasts a history of pioneers, planters, and patriots.

Home of the163-acre Cypress Gardens, the nation's most sought after, well preserved black water swamp garden, and one of the most important 18th century plantations in existence, Berkeley County is a blend of beauty, history, and tradition.

Other unforgettable wonders from centuries past include Mepkin Abbey Plantation, where monks can today be seen moving silently through its gardens to attend service at the beautiful chapel on the old grounds.

The finest in outdoor scenery and recreation can be found in places like Lake Moultrie, Lake Marion, and the Santee and Cooper Rivers. The region has long been recognized a sportsman's paradise, offering camping, hiking, boating, over 280 species of birds, and wildlife including deer, bobcat, alligator, and the occasional bear. Also, Berkeley honors the Lowcountry tradition of golfing with some of the most scenic and challenging courses around.
