Driving down the South Carolina Coast, one notices a gentle shift in the state of mind upon approaching the shrimping town of McClellanville
The dazzling sights and sounds of Myrtle Beach recede, yielding to Berkeley County's timeless small towns, the vast pine quietude of Francis Marion State Park. Southward, through a tunnel of oaks and hanging moss, the soothing scent of marshland wafted in on the mild ocean breeze. Soon one emerges into the lively town of Mt. Pleasant, the breathtaking beaches of Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island. From here veer right, toward the cypress gardens, elegant plantations, and quaint Main Streets of Dorchester County; or continue across the Cooper River Bridge and descend into the city of Charleston.
Overflowing with historic style and grace, floral stucco townhouses reflecting its subtropical climate, Charleston's lifting ambiance and deep multi-cultural heritage create a sensual symphony difficult to leave. But should one continue south, into the heart of the Lowcountry, the rewards are lush tropical forests, exotic wildlife and the boundless rice plantations of Colleton and Jasper Counties. Through the expansive Ace Basin, where marsh grass as far as the eye can see burns with another spilt-watercolor sunset. Through the rustic bayside village of Beaufort. Southward . . . the dense forest gives way to relaxing Hilton Head Island, replete with some of the finest eating, golfing, and accommodations in the country- a perfect place to kick back and cap off the South Carolina Coast experience.
